Mr. Frederick Frank wrote many books, I think over 30. Almost all the covers featured his own art work often including caliigraphy in a very colorful style. In this cover I had the opportunity to present him in a black and white photograph which promises “something different” is going to be offered in this book to his readers. And it was different in content.
This was the publisher’s (Tom Magness; Beacon Point Press) first book and he was a great admirer of Mr. Franck. He wanted this cover to be something special. I read the manuscript and saw this book was more autobiographical than his other books and I asked for a photo. After it was published Tom sent me a letter, here is an excerpt:
“I am really pleased with the way the book turned out and the author was absolutely glowing with praise! He is about 85 years old and has had almost thirty books published but he called as soon as he got his copy. He was ecstatic and enthusiastic repeating over and over again, “It’s here. It’s here,” beaming with delight as if this were the first book of his ever published. He was particularly pleased witht he cover design. He described the front cover design as “a stroke of genius.”
Here is a quote from the book which I like: ”I can't help but be a loner, incurably allergic to joining anything whatsoever, whether political party, church, sect, cult or even Zen Center. I must have suspected at a quite tender age that as far as the need for 'identity' is concerned, my (and everyone else's) only real, colorfast, identity is simply to be Human.".
