A family residence, the car will be parked inside the gate. Note that the walkway is made of cut stone.

Residential homes, joined together town house style, a small garden in front and sliding doors. These make up a Japanese home.

Houses among high rise apartments.

Where ever the house many Japanese like to have a garden, however small. Here it is one bamboo.

A bigger house with gate just one building away from the main business street.

The last time I was in Japan smoking was everywhere. Here, like in the US, increasingly the residential smoker smokes outside.

It is common to see clothes hanging out to dry.

Even here, business on the first floor, clothes hanging to dry on the street and from the second floor.

This house, garage on the first floor, space on one side. Probably a new multi story building to coome.

A house designed for the space. Most Japanese houses are post and beam, not studs and ply wood. This makes design more flexible.

An empty lot, perhaps fortunate for the people living in the house.

A pay to park lot next to a familly home.

Homes and buildings may have unusual shapes. These homes in the image below are nicer than the ones you have been seeing.

An older house, the house may not be worth much but the property is probably quite valuable.

I wonder how can they afford to waste the space just for parking on level one, nothing on levels 2 or 3.

This looks like a larger home in between two comercial buildings. Pedestrians have some protection.

The van just fits, I assume that they have to move the plants everytime they go in and out.

Often cars are parked in tight spots.

There is probably a little store or business in the first floor of this house with people living in the back and above.

A residential street. The house in front is made of corrugated metal. I wonder if the people who live there own the house and land. Not much of a yard.

Below is an older house, metal roof, However this house is not in central Tokyo but in Cho-fu, kind of a suburb, and

this house with garden is in front. But this is still a heavily populated residential area.

Another old house right in the middle of high rises. One day the land will be sold and a high rise with the same foot print will be built on this site. But right now its a hold out.

But even in a very limited space one will find the elegance of a stone path, and

an interesting wall,

or a nice gate.

Architects make the best of available parking.

A house in a residential area and

from the front an extensive garden.
